I did a front porch update for a client a few years ago, we chose new exterior colours, columns, windows, doors and lighting but she was stuck on what to do with her giant lackluster concrete stairs leading up to her front entry. What a waste of space!
So I came up with a plan to box in one side of the stairs to create quite a large seating area for a table and chairs to entertain outside since their kitchen is just right through the door. They wanted to do an update and love stone but had a limited budget so using concrete with a stone facade adds texture and interest to the country house while saving money. To save even more money the client just had me do a quick sketch of the idea.
A very simple upgrade on a small budget that creates cozy usable space, while balancing the heavy planting on the opposite side, and helps to make this (side of the house) front entry a focal point, creating no confusion for visitors on which door to use.
Incorporating greenery and plantings helps to soften the large mass of rock and creates a green symmetry on either side of the staircase which adds a much needed formality to the relaxed country house.
I hope to have finished pictures of the house soon!
